Weekly News 10 July 2020

Sunday 12 July:

Preacher: Ps Geoff Ryall.  2 Corinthians 5:16-21.   “God changes our eyesight”

Reconciliation brings healing of relationships – with God and with others

During the week:

  • Pastor Jun is now on leave. Please give him and Xuping the opportunity to have a break from their work at the church.

Care groups:       http://balwynbaptist.org.au/ministries/care-groups/

News:

  1. Prayer: We are all disappointed that there has been a spike in Covid-19 infections in Melbourne and a re-introduction of restrictions.

Please be in prayer for those who are most affected by this:

  • Those who have lost work, or have been without work for a longer period, or have limited work opportunities.
  • Those who are particularly vulnerable to the disease due to illness or age. (Those sick and in the vulnerable age group. Many other families have elderly relatives living with them.)
  • Those in aged care facilities, their families, and the staff who care for them. ( It has been reported that a staff member at Templestowe has been diagnosed with Covid-19 so patients are in quarantine).
  • Families who are again facing the prospect of home schooling, and teachers adjusting their teaching skills for online learning.
  • Children who cannot spend time with their friends, even during school holidays.
  • People who find the isolation particularly stressful and emotionally difficult.
  • The financial impact of the pandemic on the whole community.
  • Small businesses which will struggle to survive following this period.

We pray also for the many countries around the world who continue to experience significant levels of infection. In many developing countries, medical services are very limited, and people often live in very cramped conditions where they must share basic facilities. Consider people living in major cities of India, Bangladesh, Africa, South America and similar areas.

2. Who to contact: During Jun’s absence, please contact the deacons if you have any questions.

Preacher: Ps Jun Tan.     Ephesians 3:14-21. “Healing – A Community Project”

God’s healing takes place within the community of God’s people. How do we best take advantage of the resources available through Balwyn Baptist Church? (Handout attached)

During the week:

·         Pastor Jun will be taking leave from 10 July to 10 August and we trust he and Xu Ping have a refreshing time.

Care groups:      http://balwynbaptist.org.au/ministries/care-groups/

News:

1.       Table Talk: Last Sunday after our morning service we met for Table Talk, with Janet leading us on the topic, “What obstacles stop us from talking about family life together at Church?”

Various comments were made, and this gives a short summary:

·         Meeting in Small Groups or doing activities together (e.g. sport) allows people to know each other better and allows greater freedom to share.  In a large group, there is uncertainty regarding trust. There is uncertainty about whether some people will misinterpret what has been said, or maybe share with others out of context.

·         Different personalities, family backgrounds, culture, knowledge of language and past hurts may influence whether we feel free to share about personal or family issues, especially the more negative experiences.

·         In Christ, we have a sense of security in him, and this can enable us to share without the fear of being hurt.  We also recognise that we are all human and all have struggles, and that what we share can be helpful to others as well.

·         There is a need to respect everyone’s situation and life-stage.

·         It is helpful to share good news, e.g. how God has helped us and what he has been doing in our lives and in family life.

2.       Who to contact: During Jun’s absence, please contact the deacons if you have any questions and we will do our best to help:  Bert Zerbst (Secretary), Wei Li (Treasurer), Janet Washington, Julie Zhu, Jin Zhou, Geoff Ryall, Grace Munro.

News:

  1. Weekly news: Instead of having our usual monthly bulletin, we are trying this weekly “In the Family”. Our aim is to put it out by email and WeChat (in Chinese) on Friday afternoon, and also to include it on the BBC Website. We welcome your feedback on this new initiative.
  • When will we return to the Church building? The process is beginning but it is necessary for us to take sufficient time to ensure we adhere to Government regulations.
  • Last week the Music Team met on Friday and recorded songs for the Sunday service.
  • The Deacons met in the church building last week.
  • Soon, all participants will gather and the service will take place in the Church Building.

The Deacons have decided that there are certain pre-requisites before we can meet as a full congregation in the building:

  • All attendees must be free of any infection.
  • The limit on numbers needs to be 100 or more (we are currently having possibly more than 60 meeting online and we want to welcome everyone).
  • Spacing needs to be reduced from 4 square metres per person, to 2 square metres per person (at 4 square metres, only about 30-35 can gather in the Sanctuary).
  • An overwhelming majority of the congregation will need to indicate that they are willing to resume gathering together. (We will ask for a vote. We recognise that some people are employed in relatively risky occupations for Covid-19 – such as Child Care – some are more physically vulnerable to the illness, and some are more nervous than others about meeting together. Everyone’s views will be welcome.)

Won’t it be wonderful when we can all get together again! And enjoy morning tea and Community Lunch again.
